Many people think that they have a lemon simply because they bought a car that turns out to have mechanical problems. Unfortunately, that is not all it takes to have a lemon. A car is considered a lemon when a dealer or manufacturer is unable to bring the car to the standard of its warranty. Therefore, if you don’t have a dealer-backed or manufacturer-backed warranty, then your car will not be considered a lemon. Beware of as-is purchases on older cars that no longer have a factory warranty because you won’t have the same lemon law protections. You have the option to get the car looked at by an independent mechanic before making the purchase and doing this may save you a lot of money in the long run if it can prevent you from buying a lemon.
